GIVEAWAY – Poogie Pants Cloth Pads (Mama Cloth) – US/CAN ~ 8/18

I am thrilled to share a Cloth Pad giveaway today from Whitney at Poogie Pants Cloth.

The winner of this giveaway will receive 2 Super Absorbent Cloth menstrual pads in the pattern of the designer’s choosing.

These pads were designed with protection and absorbency in mind. They have an outer layer of waterproof PUL, a suede cloth liner against the skin to wick away moisture, and an amazingly thin layer of Zorb 2 with 2 layers of Hemp terry for heavy flow. The channels are sewn in the lining and absorbent layers only, allowing for great leak protection. ~Poogie Pants Cloth

I recently returned from a family vacation to MN (and a pretty long hiatus from the blog…I apparently have difficulty with multi-tasking).

Expecting a visit from Aunt Flo during my time there, I came prepared with my trusty Diva Cup and my shiny new Poogie Pants Cloth pads. I can’t tell you how nice it was to not have to take up room in my suitcase with boxes of tampons and huge packs of pads as I used to do!

Unfortunately in all of the going back and forth between different family homes I managed to lose my Diva Cup (and have some more than slightly embarrassing convos with my brother and sister trying to describe what this thing was/looked like that I was asking them to search their houses for…).

At any rate, it didn’t turn up so I checked the internets on the off chance that I might be able to by one in a store in anticipation of my imminent monthly visit. And it was Whole Foods in Uptown for the win – I even paid $10 less for it than I would have in Canada!

It still makes me laugh to think of the moment – I was checking out with my Diva Cup, my new crystal deodorant, an organic tomato and a Kombucha I grabbed from the impulse aisle. Without batting an eye the cashier asked me if I would like my Kombucha out of the bag. I replied with a cheery “Yes” and walked out thinking, “Normal people do not have such conversations!

But before I gave my new Diva a try, I wanted to test out the Poogie Pants cloth.

I was intrigued from the moment I opened the box with these things. First of all, the shipping was amazingly quick for an order from the US to Canada – and Whitney at Poogie Pants is amazingly quick as well with a response to any inquiry - she has provided incredible service from the beginning.

I pulled them out to find a pad with a pretty backing that reminded me quite a lot of a disposable in looks and design (this would be a perfect pad for someone mildly weirded out by the idea of using cloth because it looks so ‘normal’).

The first thing I noticed when I tried them out was the fact that they really are ‘super’. Now, compared to the giant thick disposables I used to wear, this was nothing. But compared to my other cloth pad experiences, you could definitely feel this pad down there. Personally, I did not find that at all to be a bad thing.

In fact I have never felt more secure with a cloth pad – it was thick enough, long enough and sturdy enough (no shifting happened at all) that I would happily wear it without a Diva on a heavy day – a claim I can make about no other cloth pad I have tried (and I have tried many). I would highly recommend this pad to those with really heavy cycles or to women who use pads exclusively. Read the rest of this entry »

A Million Tiny Things ~ GIVEAWAY (CLOSED)

In the past, whenever I felt overwhelmed and neurotic and heading into an endless downward spiral, I would read Anne Lamott’s book of essays Traveling Mercies, and I would snap out of it. Because here’s someone even more neurotic, even more overwhelmed, overall just crazier than me, and somehow she manages to learn to forgive herself and live anyway…

…I’m almost definitely even more neurotic, even more overwhelmed, overall just crazier than you, and somehow I do manage to learn to forgive myself and live anyway. ~Kenna Lee

A Million Tiny Things: A Mother’s Urgent Search for Hope in a Changing Climate, by Kenna Lee, is absolutely one of my favourite books that I have ever read. (Have I ever mentioned that I read a lot?)

From the moment I picked it up, I was hooked (I’m telling you it was as bad as the last book of Harry Potter!). I was literally laughing my head off – and alternatively near tears – with just about every other paragraph, and ultimately so sorry when the book came to an end that I turned around and read it right over again!

There is no better way to convey the why of what made me love this book so much beyond saying simply: Kenna gets it.

Let me ask you – are you a mom? Have you ever felt eco guilt? Have you ever pondered how difficult it is to do what you know/feel is right combined with the necessity of balancing family and half a million other things and maybe maintaining your sanity at the same time? Yes? OK then – you will want to read this book.

There is so much wisdom – so much funny – so much truth in these words Kenna has bared her soul to share. And yes, she probably is more neurotic than you :) – but she’ll still inspire the heck out of you while she’s at it. Read the rest of this entry »

LOOT Handmade Necklace GIVEAWAY ~ US/Can ~ CLOSED

This is the one I bought.

I am pleased to be sharing a review and giveaway today from Andrea of LOOT – a WAHM with one of the coolest products I’ve come across yet!

The moment I saw these necklaces I knew I had to have one (and hopefully will be adding a few more to my stock in the near future!). And really, I’m not a big jewelry buyer – it’s just not normally my thing – but LOOT totally caught my eye and immediately went on my wish list.

The coolest thing about these necklaces – aside from how pretty they are - is that they are upcycled! Andrea makes them out of used t-shirts – isn’t that awesome? I know I am gushing but really I’m so impressed.

I bought the one pictured to the left there. Every time I wear it I get tons of compliments (and of course I have to respond with, “Guess what it’s made of!”) which probably most people don’t really need to know but I’m OK with it. :)

I also received great customer service from LOOT – my questions were responded to promptly, the pricing seems to me to be more than fair and there were no issues with quality or shipping.

Because I like these necklaces so much I asked Andrea about donating one for a giveaway here at Becoming Crunchy, which she generously agreed to. Read on to find out a little bit more about Andrea and how you can enter to win one of her lovely creations… Read the rest of this entry »

Blogiversary Giveaway #5 – Reusable Lunch Pockets From QWERTY O {CLOSED}

Today we are presenting our Blogiversary Giveaway # 5
courtesy of QWERTY O!

Are you looking for yet another way to rid yourself of icky plastic bags, this time in your lunch?
QWERTY O’s fabulous lunch pockets take the place of plastic lunch bags for drier foods and sandwiches.

Giveaway includes three 100% cotton lunch pockets similar to those in the photo:

  • One sandwich pocket to hold a larger sandwich ( 7″x7″ approx)
  • Two smaller pockets to hold dry foods such as trail mix, crackers, fruit, carrot sticks, nuts, etc.

The pockets are easy to clean! Turn them inside out and throw them in the wash at the end of the week with your other kitchen laundry.

Nothing too fancy, the bags close with an elastic strap that pulls around the back to keep the pocket sealed. No noisy velcro to collect crumbs and food. Sides are serged. They turn into convenient little packages you can throw in your purse, lunch bag or a pocket. When unfolded it is large enough to use as a placemat to place your sandwich and sides on but without all the bulk of a large unfolding sandwich wrap.

Please take a minute to learn a little more about the lovely ladies behind QWERTY O.

Sunday Surf – June 26, 2011

I was NOT happy when I woke up this morning.

I’m never normally happy upon waking…I’m not one of those people who jumps out of bed with joy to greet the day. But usually by the time I’ve visited the bathroom and brushed my teeth I’m fairly good to go – as long as coffee follows soon after.

This morning though, I was still washing my hands and getting ready to brush my teeth when my husband called me downstairs to look at my daughter’s poopy diaper.

You’d think by now he could deal with this stuff on his own??

The reason he needed my assistance was the fact that there were ‘strange looking’ things in there (the remains of solid food she hadn’t digested) and he was worried. I told him what it was and grumbled back upstairs to brush my teeth.

Then she was acting tired and it was her naptime, so I attempted to get her to sleep for half an hour, which seemed more like 3 hours as I hadn’t yet had my coffee.

Finally we gave it up as a bad job and came downstairs, where I cried and told my husband all about how this was the worst morning ever – especially as he was leaving in 20 minutes to go help someone move and I had to deal with it all by myself and I wouldn’t be able to eat breakfast or have coffee or anything and it was all terrible.

Yes, I am not a morning person. Read the rest of this entry »

Handmade Reversible Drool Proof Bib Review & GIVEAWAY (US & Canada ~ CLOSED)

Bib I received from Little Miss Kate Designs

Bib I received from Little Miss Kate Designs

EDIT: Great news! I’ve extended the giveaway deadline to July 10th so I can cross-promote this giveaway with the Natural Parents Network.

This is a joint giveaway with Becoming Crunchy and Natural Parents Network. You may enter at one site only. Please find the section marked “Win it!” for the mandatory main entry and optional bonus entries.

If you already entered according to the previous requirements (which were 1 comment with all your entries) – your entries are still valid. You are also welcome to complete any of the new bonus entries available according to the specifications below. :)

Back in April I had the chance to attend The Great Cloth Diaper Change in Toronto, helping to create a Guinness World Record of the most cloth diapers ever changed simultaneously.

While at the event I saw another mom wearing her baby in a carrier that looked like the one I was interested in buying myself; we struck up a conversation and in the end I realized I was talking to Katie of Little Miss Kate Designs.

Loving any chance I can get to support a work at home mom, I mentioned that if she’d ever like me to do a review or giveaway of her handmade products I would be happy to do so.

So a few weeks ago she sent me one of her Reversible Drool-Proof bibs – an awesome score for this mama of a very drooly, teething baby!

From the moment I opened the package, it was love at first sight (and yes, I do get that excited over bibs ;) ).

Here’s the thing – I’ve tried many different styles and sizes of bibs, and rarely liked any of them beyond the occasional cuteness. Read the rest of this entry »
