I Knew I Was a Natural Mommy When…
Mommies, daddies and fellow green enthusiasts…my name is Jessica aka Cloth Diapering Mama and it is my honor to be guest posting over here at Becoming Crunchy, as it is one of my very favorite blogs! I’m an advocate for Natural and Green Parenting and for our dear care-giver…Mother Earth. Please stop by and say hi sometime or find me on Facebook or Twitter. I hope you enjoy my post…had a little fun with this one.
If you’re a reader of the Becoming Crunchy blog you have undoubtedly seen the unfolding of a Natural Mommy and Daddy in Kelly and Dave. We all have a starting point. Some of us were practicing Natural Parenting before we realized that it was actually a way of life…some of us read about it and wanted in and some of us had an epiphany of sorts – or an awakening – once we were blessed with the gift of our little ones.
However you ended up HERE, know that by being a part of this community you are raising awareness and spreading the word about Natural Family Living…grass roots style…and that’s about as organic as you can get!
Here’s a little bit about my Natural and Green awakening:
I knew I was a natural mommy when…
That expensive crib turned into a GREAT laundry basket!!
- Just didn’t feel right to put my newly emerged nursling into a separate sleep space…even with our big-boy, our first born, nearly 4 years old…cuddling, heart to heart and breath to breath remains our bed-time routine.

~Our Family Bed/Circus~ Baby says, "Mom get that camera out of my face, I'm busy bonding with my brother!"
I knew I was a natural mommy when I thought…
Forget a fancy diaper bag! My baby is my best accessory!
- My baby’s favorite spot is nestled close…in a sling, (as much a part of me as when he was on the inside)…gently observing the world in a comfortable, safe place…

Baby Brady sleeping soundly in the Mei Tai carrier.
I knew I was a green mommy when…
The enormous waste of disposable diapers was an eye opener to a more eco-friendly and healthy way of life.
- The Cloth Diapering Mama website would not exist if I hadn’t had my green epiphany when my first son was nearly 2 months old.
- The idea of a one-time use diaper is baffling to me after 4 years of cloth diapering.
- The ease and benefits of cloth diapering far out number any “inconvenience” that they may present.

Pocket diapers double as great swim diapers, great for the beach!
I knew I was a natural mommy when…
The mere thought of CRY IT OUT or FERBERIZING our child was instinctively horrifying to me.
- Its simple really…Baby needs something…baby cries…mommy or daddy responds. The quicker we respond the more trust is built and the less vocal the child will need to be in order to get our attention. Well attached babies cry less and thrive more.
- No, crying is NOT good for my child’s lungs…I never bought that one and never will!
I knew I was a green mommy when…
I refused to bathe or slather my child in anything that he could not ingest without consequences!
- CHEMICALS popped up on my radar like never before. I was spotting them everywhere… Did you ever read the ingredients on a bottle of Johnson and Johnson baby wash… have you investigated what the term “fragrance” means? Toxins. Toxins that smell like flowers or baby powder do not make them less TOXIC!
- We now purchase very little prepared “product.” Most cleansers are homemade and/or contain few ingredients.
I knew I was a green mommy when…
Organic became a word that flies out of my mouth like the air I breathe!
- We eat 90% organic whole foods, very little processed; we do like the occasional baked good.
- I make a gigantic effort NOT to bring any new plastic into our home and I refuse to buy produce wrapped in plastic…what is the point of that!? Why do we want to leach chemicals into our earthly goods? We see this a lot at Trader Joe’s…so when I shop there I only buy loose fruits and veggies.
- I shop in the bulk bins to reduce waste with my own containers from home and we avoid plastic like the plague… believe it or not I save lots of money this way!

A beautiful array of fresh veggies and fruits from Suzie's Farm in San Diego, our CSA provider.
I knew I was a green mommy when…
I started letting my youngest son play in my cleaning cabinets under the sink…
- Don’t worry…I clean only with white vinegar and baking soda…it might be old fashioned but it works beautifully and I actually enjoy the smell.
I knew I was a natural and green mommy when…
I let my preschooler roll around in dirt to appreciate and connect with the astounding energy from our planet, Earth.
- Lessons taught about the earth and its resources lead to respect, principles, values and innate kindness to creation. Time spent in nature is invaluable!

I knew I was a natural mommy when…
My kids prefer natural and homeopathic remedies when sick…and respond to them better than Allopathic drugs.
- I can always find something food based or in my little homeopathic first aid kid to take away the symptoms of childhood illness. My sons both respond better with a cool bath for fever than they ever do with Tylenol or Motrin.
- When we hear the unmistakable barking sounds of croup coming from our older son…he gets up and hits the bathroom for a steam treatment before we have to mention it.
I knew I was a natural mommy when…
My husband said, “I don’t care what you do…as long as you keep shaving your armpits!”
- Sometimes new/natural ideas can rub people the wrong way because they seem outlandish or over the top. When my dear hubby found out I hadn’t used traditional store bought shampoo in months he was a bit shocked. I pointed out how great my hair felt and looked…he AGREED! Then pleaded with me not to become TOO natural!
- Once I explained to him that my “naturalism” or “purist” behavior was not just about our planet but about the health of our family, he softened – and he seeks out glass containers and organic products when shopping!
If you can relate to more than one of these scenarios then you, too could be considered a natural & green mommy, daddy or caregiver! We all have one thing in common. We want more for our kids and we want to sustain this planet for their kids, and grandkids and so on…
Please join me on my quest to spread Natural and Green parenting methods…along with Kelly, Dave and many other bloggers in our community.
Thanks for reading!

I just love this post mama!
My favorite is the quote from your hubby – lol!
I, too have been so impressed with how 'on board' Dave has gotten with everything when it comes to becoming crunchy – it definitely wasn't his thing in the beginning, but he surprises me now with how much he thinks of when it comes to our choices! When I overheard him on the phone with a duct cleaning company and he asked about what they used and whether their were any toxins involved, I was just so proud and happy…
You are so inspiring on the plastic problem, too…I must admit it is not something I pay enough attention to – I really want to start thinking more about that! I'm going to have to imagine a little Cloth Mama Jess angel sitting on my shoulder whenever I go shopping from now on.
I did want to ask you about bringing your own containers to the bulk store – how does that work? I know the standard here is that they provide plastic bags and weigh them at checkout – did you figure out an alternative method for weighing with the store? Or do you bring bags? I really want to start doing that!
Thanks so much for your awesome inspiration Jessica – I'm just thrilled to have you here today!
Our family has been on long and winding path to becoming crunchy
We have made changes slowly for the most part, but others have required larger leaps of faith. If someone had taken a snapshot of my life today and shown it to me 10 years ago, 5 years ago, or even 3 years ago, I would have probably responded with "What kind of crazy person goes to THAT extreme to live more healthy?" And even now, I have plenty of things that could be improved upon or that are not as healthy as they could be. But, when our family is ready to take those next steps, I am sure that we will evolve ever so slightly and after the transition will be another one of those "why haven't we been doing THIS all along?" moments!
Thanks for sharing!

YES, Justine…once you get into the groove of a "new" green/natural act it seems like it is easy as pie…
avoiding plastic is not hard at all for me…I've just adjusted how I shop!

Thanks Kelly! I love being over here today
As far as the husbands go… it really is all about baby steps…and as you can see your husband is naturally coming around! YAY Dave!
At any store that sells bulk you can bring your own containers. If you wish to bring heavier glass containers go to the customer service and tell them that you want to use your own containers for bulk. They will weigh them and give you something to bring up to the register afterwards for the cashier to scan or deduct from the scale.
The containers that I am using right now for bulk, however don't need to be weighed, they are so light. I'm using really big yogurt containers from a long time ago (re-used many, many times) and any sort of plastic container that enters this home (by way of take out or my husband) gets re-used for bulk. I also had some sandwich bags in the cabinet from years ago that are part of the rotation. Then I just write the item # directly on the package with a sharpie pen that I keep in my purse. I see some other people doing this and the cashiers are never confused. A thorough post with pics is in the works…

Love this post! Sweet & inspiring. I totally identify with you on all of these things! CSA for produce, bulk at our co-op, natural cleaning products, family bed (no CIO) & cloth diapers. I love being inspired by other like-minded mommas. Baby Girl is almost 7 months old and she's never had a drop of soap on her (water & jojoba oil only) and I just acquired my 7th baby carrier, a gorgeous woven wrap.
We have pared down on the plastic a lot, but I know we could do better in that area. Our co-op has a scale in the front, so you can weigh your container & mark the tare on it before you fill it. Super handy, and I use that for oils, peanut butter, maple syrup, soaps… but I keep our flours, lentils, rice, etc. in big glass jars, so those go in plastic bags.
How do you navigate around that?
Isn't it so helpful to have the husbands on board too? (even if there's a bit of skepticism at first!
) I tended to spearhead the green movement around here in the beginning, but now he's even pickier about food than I am. I might be willing to compromise on organic produce if it's something I'm really craving and can't find in organic (or it costs 10x as much!). He'll pass it entirely, or encourage me to splurge so we're consistent in supporting the demand for organic produce. So helpful to have that encouragement!

Hi Rosemary!
Regarding the lentils, beans, etc…could you just re-use those same plastic bags every week, keep them in your grocery bags and you will be drastically reducing your carbon footprint! Great job for buying bulk…gotta love those bulk bins…fun to find some new snacks in there sometimes, too. My kids love these little ginger/sesame nuggets in lieu of pretzels, cookies or junk food.
I'm proud of your hubby for insisting on quality food…isn't it great that our kids will grow up with 2 healthy parents…I can't WAIT to see how natural GREEN will be for the next generation!!!! xo

I love your site!! Thanks
Do you have any "recipes" for the cleaning products and shampoo you mentioned in this article? I would be very interested!! Thanks
Kate, I'm so glad you enjoyed my site! Please stay tuned for more posts about natural haircare, cleaning supplies and how to fine tune them to your family's needs!
Coconut oil, baking soda and vinegar are the most versatile ingredients that I work with…oh and a little lavender oil!

LOL!!! Your hubby sounds like mine! Yes it took some convincing and still does for many things, but who could argue with common sense? Though I was always keen for green living, being a mommy certainly amped up my ingredient reading, holistic alternative seeking, fruit and veggie planting side. It's amazing how neurosis can be so productive!!
Thanks for sharing your turning points Jess, I bet a lot of mamas will realize they're already practicing natural parenting!!
